How to make sure that search engines find your website

An essential aspect of search engine optimization (SEO) is ensuring that the pages within your website are as accessible as possible to search engines. Not only the home page of a website can be indexed, but also the internal pages within the site structure. The internal pages of the site often contain important content such as products, services or general information, and therefore can be uniquely optimized for relevant terms. As a result, easy access to these pages is vital.

There are many do's and don'ts in ensuring that all of your pages can be found by search engines. However, it is important to first determine how search engines find and index web pages.

Search engines use “bots” (also known as “bots” or “spiders”) to find content on the web to include in their index. A bot is a computer program that can follow the hyperlinks on a web page, which is known as "crawling". When the bot finds a document, it includes the contents in the search engine's index, then follows the links it can find and continues the process of crawling and indexing. With this in mind, it becomes clear that the navigation structure of a website is important in getting as many pages indexed as possible.

When considering your site's navigation structure, you must consider the content hierarchy. Search engines judge what they feel are the most important pages of a site when looking at rankings and that page placement can affect site structure. The home page is generally considered the most important page on a site - it is the top-level document and usually attracts the most incoming links. From here, search engine bots can usually reach pages that are three clicks away from the home page. Therefore, your most important pages should be one click away, the next two important clicks away and so forth.

The next thing to consider is how to thread the pages together. Search engine bots can only follow public HTML href links, which means that flash links, JavaScript links, dropdowns and submit buttons will not all be available to bots. Links with query strings with two or more parameters are also usually ignored, so be aware of this if you're running a dynamically generated website.

The best links to use from an SEO perspective are generic HTML text links, where not only can bots follow but the text in the link can also be used to describe the destination page and point of further optimization. Image links are also acceptable but the ability to describe the landing page is diminished, since the alt text attribute is not given as much importance to ranking as link text.

The most natural way to organize content on a website is to categorize it. Divide your products, services, or information into relevant categories and then arrange them so that they link to the most important aspects of the home page. If you have an overwhelming amount of information for each category, again you will need to narrow down your content. This may include having articles on a similar topic, different types of products for sale, or content that can be geographically segmented. Ranking is a natural improvement the further you segment your information, the more content you can provide and the more niche keyword phrases you can target.

If you are still concerned that your important pages may not be indexed, you can consider adding a sitemap to your website. A sitemap can be better described as an index page, it is a list of links to all pages within a site contained within a single page. If you link to a sitemap from your homepage, it gives the bot easy access to all the pages within your site. Just remember that bots can't usually track more than 100 links from a single page, so if your site is larger than that, you might want to consider spreading the sitemap across multiple pages.

There are many considerations to keep in mind when optimizing your site for search engines, and making your pages accessible by search engine bots should be the first step in your optimization process. Following the above tips will help make your site fully accessible and help you get multiple rankings and additional traffic.
